Most Caribbean Carnivals happen in the spring or summer, but two islands save theirs for the holidays. Sugar Mas in Saint Kitts and the Crucian Christmas Festival in Saint Croix both run through Christmas and New Year’s, so you can trade your winter coat for a costume and ring in the new year on the road. Here’s what first-timers should know.
Sugar Mas: Saint Kitts
This season marks Sugar Mas 55, the 55th edition of the Saint Kitts and Nevis national Carnival. The Carnival Village opens on December 11, and the biggest days come at the end of the season: J’Ouvert on December 26, the Grand Parade on New Year’s Day and Last Lap on January 2. In between, the Soca Monarch, Calypso and Panorama competitions keep the nights busy.
Crucian Christmas Festival: Saint Croix
The main festival runs from December 26 to January 2, with eight nights of free live music at the Festival Village. Add J’Ouvert in the streets, the parades, a food fair, boat races and fireworks to close it all out. Competitions like the Calypso Monarch take place earlier in December. Getting there is a little easier this season too, with a new weekly Saturday nonstop flight from Newark.
Can You Do Both?
The two festivals overlap, and Sugar Mas J’Ouvert lands on the same day the Crucian Christmas Festival Village opens, so most first-timers pick one. Choose Saint Kitts if you want the build-up from J’Ouvert to the New Year’s Day parade, or Saint Croix if eight nights of Village concerts sound like your kind of holiday. Not sure which fits you? Our Find Your Carnival page can help.
Why Planning Early Matters
Holiday travel and Carnival happen at the same time, so flights and rooms fill up quickly and prices climb the closer you get. If holiday mas is on your list, now is the time to start planning.
