The Culture

What is Carnival?

Carnival is more than a festival. It is a celebration of Caribbean culture, history, music, freedom, creativity, and community, a story shaped by many cultures and many generations.

Carnival is culture.
Carnival is history.
Carnival is freedom.
Carnival is community.

It’s the heartbeat of the Caribbean. It’s where music, dance, costume, food, and people come together to celebrate life, resilience, and heritage. Carnival isn’t just something we attend. It’s something we live, it’s in our history, and it runs deep in our souls.

Cards flipped: 0 of 9

Playing Mas

Short for masquerade. Playing mas means joining a mas band and parading on the road in costume on the main Carnival days. You buy a costume package from a band, and most packages include the costume, drinks, food, music trucks and security.

J'Ouvert

From the French jour ouvert, meaning "day opens." J'Ouvert is the pre-dawn street party that opens the main Carnival days, with paint, mud, oil, powder and water. Wear clothes and shoes you're happy to throw away. In Barbados it's called Foreday Morning.

Fetes

The parties of Carnival season. You'll find all-inclusives with food and drinks included, breakfast fetes that start at sunrise, cooler fetes where you bring your own drinks, and boat rides out on the water.

Soca

Short for "soul of calypso," soca is the sound of Carnival. Groovy soca is smoother and slower; power soca is fast and high-energy. Some islands have their own sounds too, like bouyon from Dominica.

Road March

The song played most often on the road during the parade. Winning Road March is one of the biggest honors in Carnival music, so knowing the contenders before you arrive makes the road even sweeter.

Monday Mas

On many islands, Carnival Monday is a lighter day on the road. Bands wear Monday Wear, a simpler look than the full costume, and save the full costume for the main parade day.

Last Lap

The final hours of the last parade day, when everyone squeezes every bit of energy out of the road before Carnival ends for the year.

Jab Jab

A traditional Carnival character covered in black oil or paint, often with horns, chains and drums. Jab Jab is especially strong in Grenada, and it shapes how J'Ouvert looks there.

Panorama

The steelpan competition, where steel orchestras perform full arrangements of the season's songs. Steelpan was born in Trinidad, and several islands hold their own Panorama. A must-see if you love live music.

The Real Talk

Fun costs real money, so plan for it.

Between flights, costumes, fete tickets, and accommodations, a single Carnival trip can easily run from a few hundred dollars to several thousand, and prices only climb the longer you wait to book.

Between choosing a mas band, picking the right fetes, and figuring out what to pack, it is easy to feel overwhelmed if you do not know where to start. That is exactly why preparing ahead of time matters. When you know what to expect, you spend less time stressed and confused, and more time actually enjoying the road, the music, and the culture you came for.

Carnival is a celebration of where we come from, who we are, and how Caribbean culture continues to evolve. It is vibrant, colorful, full of life, and meant to be experienced. So whether you are a first-timer or a seasoned Carnival lover, come with an open mind, come ready to learn, and most importantly, come Carnival Ready.
